DeCamp Settlement Something BIG is happening.

Just south of Staunton, Illinois, on Route 66 (today it is Route 4), was a small mining town called DeCamp. All that is left today of this small town is the old General Store. Bill Osborn and Lynn Puryear now live in the General Store. They also own the property directly east of the old electric railway that ran through town. The miners lived on the east side of the tracks and main part of town along with the upperclass lived on the west side of the tracks. On the east side, Bill and Lynn…

See the way Route 66 looked in 1913

My grandparents were pioneers of the Old Trails National Road that later became part of Route 66. Check out the photos from the early 1900s on my web site at http://community.webshots.com/user/mrharleydon You'll see the "Greenlaw" albums in black and white which are from their collection that I inherited after their deaths in the 1970s. So I've got Route 66 in my blood and I inherited the spirit of the road and need to "take that… Continue

Art's Motel Restored!

Art's Motel in Farmersville, Illinois experienced a bit of a renaissance as Route 66 Association of Illinois preservation volunteers brought back to life the Art's Motel advertising sign. Several volunteers found themselves gathering to complete a great project in the works for sometime. With the on site leadership of Dr. Joe Coscino, the project really blossomed. Thanks go to Lou Vargo and Larry Scinto who logged many hours traveling, visiting and phoning the motel. Many thanks also go out to… Continue

Oh The Irony

So funny, here we are working at being healthy wouldnt ya know it, we get loads of perscripstion drugs and cigarettes.

Well, just part of the job. I wish we could drive for a company that only hauled good stuff. But, that just dont seem to be the way the business goes. Second time back to L.A. CA and waiting for a load.…

We've made it...!

We're nearly settled into our new home. Of course, the new upstairs drywall needs to be primed & painted, but that's cakewalk (especially compared to actually drywalling). My studio is nearly complete, making me happy, and Remmy is already quite at ease in his new home.

I hope everyone is doing well!

Route 66 Road Trip-Day 2

Saturday September 8, 2007:

Row…row…row your boat, let’s just say that we thought we were going to need a boat to get out of Tulsa. Thunder storms rolled though all night long, with very heavy rains. For example they had 3 inches of rain between 12:00 am and 2:00 am, and the weather service predicted

another 2 inches by 3:00 am. Needless to say, we were lucky and not effected…

Route 66 Road Trip-Day 1

September 7, 2007

What a day! It is my last day before I start my new job next week and I was ready to get the heck out of Dodge. John picked me up at 2:30 pm from Overland Park, KS. We traveled down US Highway 69 to Riverton, KS and we picked up Route 66. Due to time constraints we did not stop by Eisler

Brother’s. We did drive by the Rainbow

Bridge between Riverton

and Baxter Springs, but because of the rain, we did not stop.…

On the road again

Ok, less than 24 hours, the hubby is picking me at work and then we are off to OKLAHOMA! To drive the entire OK Route 66. We have never been further west than Tulsa so I am really looking forward to seeing new places on the Route.

part 2

We had researched the Route well, and had fabulous maps from Jim Ross and Jerry McLanahan, as well as the full map set downloaded from www.historic66.com

. All of these proved to be invaluable. We also had our list of ‘must see’

places on the way as well as a loosely planned itinerary. We had planned to

drive 100 miles on our first day, but…

Route 66 - You Just Have To Love It

I love The Mother Road! My family traveled Route 66 in 1955 when we drove from our home in St. Louis to attened the grand opening of Disneyland in California. I explored the Buffalo Ranch in Oklahoma, sat on a spring loaded rabbit in Arizona and ate in roadside parks with my family. As I grow older, these memories become more important to me and even more clear. Oh, to relive the the glory days of Route 66! Over the past couple of years I did just that with my best friend (since vietnam) Woody… Continue
