Get More Kicks On Route 66

I am planning to take a ride on R66 this fall. I'm pretty sure we are starting from California, and then heading E toward Chicago. I would like any advice I can get concerning what to do and what not to do.

Thanks

Carl

Their are the obvious things to do but I sure to seek and find the old sign at Topock on the California side. Oatman and Sitgreaves Pass is pretty cool. When you get into Kingman do not pass up the museum at the train station!!!!! Every time I go through Seligman I get Angel to cut my hair. I haven't seen him in over a year so hopefully he's still in good health. Pick up the EZ66 Guide, it's easy to use and it's just a very thorough guide. You WILL enjoy yourself.

Ralph and red have it spot on as they've included my favourite part of 66 topock to kingman.I would read through your favourite 66 books and write down the main things you'd like to see in each state and work your trip round that.If you decide to walk over the old chain of rocks bridge(which is a must)make sure you park on the Illinois side as it has a good car park with cameras. They've had quite a few car breakins on the St Louis side.Be sure to stay in a few old motels like the Blue Swallow in NM it'll add to your trip.
Happy travels Mark.

Mark,

Thanks for the info................I am really looking forward to the trip, but a bit apprehensive of the unknown--(even if I resemble my Highway Patorl idol) especially since this will be the first long trip on a Harley. I surely will let you know how it went.

Thanks again,

Carl

Carl i'm sure you'll be fine your Harleys new.The only thing i'd suggest is taking some tire plugs incase of a puncture. Also get in touch with Croc on this site i'm sure he'd like to meet up with you in Texas and maybe you could do a few miles of 66 together on your Harleys.Have a great trip wish i was going on my Triumph with you. The best advice I can say is to go as slow as you possibly can and milk out the trip. My funnest route 66 trips have always been stopping at anything of minor interest. It's all clues to a puzzle, with a ton of great people along the way. When I rush my trips, I go crazy wondering about all the specific things I missed. It's addicting :)

Riding it on a Harley is the funnest. I've enjoyed my car trips, but on the bike is something you'll never forget.

Remember on a new harley, 2008 and up, you get about 225-240 miles and you're out of gas. On pre-2008 harleys you'll get almost exactly 175 miles (if you go faster than 70 mph it drops a bit). The only place you need to worry about is between barstow and Needles. Roy's in Amboy is selling gas again, so you should be golden.

Theres a great harley dealership about 15 miles west of Flagstaff if you need anything. It's in Bellemont. They're great people and the best dealership I've ever dealt with.

I'm jealous. Have a blast.

Carl,

I'm leaving Santa Monica heading to Chicago starting July 6. I'll be riding my '03 Road King Classic. I'll let you know any tips after the trip. But for now, internet research, maps and books are the best way to plan.

Carl,

When are you leaving CA in the fall? It'd be cool if we meet along the way. I'll be leaving the Chicago area on September 5 ... heading west ... taking as much as Route 66 as possible. Unfortunately, I have to do the trip in 2 weeks time. The closer it gets, the more apprehensive I become, but I want to do this NOW ... while I still can. I know I'll regret the short amount of time, but I want to drive the route anyway....

Rick ... do you know when you'll land in the Chicagoland area?
