On our 24 day trek down the entire length of ol' 66 in 2007 we kept hearing that Bob 'was about a day ahead of us'. We kept our pace to our liking - about 100 miles per day and pulled into Winslow about 3pm. We stopped at the 'Standin' on the corner' gift shop to BS for awhile and then headed over to the La Posada for a cocktail. Lo and behold there was Bob's van. We went into the La Posada and ran straight into Bob and a helicopter pilot friend of his. He was very gracious with his time and we spent about 45 minutes just shootin' the breeze. Before we parted he called us back to his van and gave us, and signed, a bunch of his artwork for us and told us to keep an eye out for him in Kingman, where he was headed to get some work done on his van. We didn't catch him in Kingman but I will tell you this about Bob - he was a true gentleman, he was true to his word, and above all, he was a true character. I'll post pix if I can find them. RIP Bob, you were a great man!
Sometimes, the best meetings are the surprise/unplanned ones.
I was lucky to have met Bob, September 2009. I was in the midst of my Route 66 journey ... and had re-arranged my plans so I could spend more time with Melba at 4 Women On The Route and with Laurel at Afton Station OK. While I was visiting with Laurel and Ron M, Bob pulled up in his Mustang, on his way back to Springfield. We had a wonderful visit. I uploaded 2 pictures from that afternoon.
