Get More Kicks On Route 66

Motels Between Flagstaff and Santa Monica

Hi Everyone. I hope your new year is off to a great start. I cannot believe we're already into February. All the snow here in Connecticut has me dreaming about springtime and a road trip. I've planned a short one-week trip in April, where I'm going to fly to Phoenix and then drive to Flagstaff. Once in Flagstaff, I'm going to drive Route 66 to Santa Monica. Then I'll drive Interstate 10 back to Phoenix and fly home. Can anyone recommend some vintage motels between Flagstaff and Santa Monica? Thank you for your help. ~ Rob

Hey Rob
You are driving the choicest bit of the road from Flagstaff all of the way to Barstow. You'll really enjoy the run from Seligman to Needles. All old road and some great sights. I can't recommend any vintage hotels since my son and I stayed in Flagstaff at the Hampton Inn and drove the rest of the way to SoCal in 1 day. However we did really like the Hampton Inn on the Northern Arizona campus and enjoyed the proximity to downtown Flagstaff. It's a great college town with good restaurants and a lively feel to it. We ate at a Sushi restaurant that I'd recommend if your tastes lean towards raw fish. You've got enough time to take a side trip to the Grand Canyon while you're on the route... highly recommended if you've not done that before. Oatman is pretty neat. The drive up to it is worth the whole trip with the incredible switchbacks. As I recall there is one of the tee pee motels near Bakersfield as you approach the LA megalopolis if you're looking for vintage. I'd suggest you get one of the Route 66 guidebooks for some other suggestions along the way. You can check out some of our story at our website by clicking here. It has more details on places we visited along with some recommendations. Good luck and have fun.

Cheers

Hi Rob i would recommend the Stagecoach motel in Seligman Az.The family make you more than welcome.Even if you don't stay there make sure you have a pizza in there parlor out front best you'll taste. It's on the east side of town.If you come off the interstate(which you shouldn't be) you'll pass it.If you come on 66 from Ash Fork as you come upto the junction by seligman you'll have to take a right as it's about half a mile out of town.
Have a great trip,Mark.

Rob,
I can recommend 2 motels I've personally stayed at.

In Kingman, Az The Hilltop Motel Great old sign owners have restored the motel but kept it as original as possible. Very Clean, friendly owners.
In Rialto, Ca The Wigwam Motels you have to sleep in a wigwam if you haven't. Again very clean, friendly owners.
My wife and I stayed in both of these on our honeymoon in 2007. I hope this helps!

Hey Rob,
I know Williams is only 35 miles from Flagstaff, but you can easily spend a half day or an entire day in each city. My favorite hotel in Williams is the Historic Grand Canyon Hotel. Aside from Williams being the last Route 66 town to be bypassed by I-40, the city is also the "Gateway to the Grand Canyon". If you have never seen the Grand Canyon, you simply gotta!!
Williams has a walking tour (map) available for .25 at the tourist information building. Seligman has an abundance of hotels it is difficult to suggest one, but the Stagecoach is great. I would suggest the Route 66 motel in Barstow. The Tee Pee motels are located in Holbrook AZ (opposite direction you are going) and San Bernardino CA. The EZ guide is the best out there for directions and suggestions.

Stop by the Route 66 museum in Victorville and say hi :)
