Get More Kicks On Route 66

I was inspired Ken Turmel's print "Route 66 and More" to start collecting postmarks from Illinois route 66 towns on a map. Also, I collect pictorial postmarks featuring route 66 imagery on envelopes and postcards from all 8 states. Does anyone else share this interest? I am beginning to collect ideas for a passport style book for the mother road. I know other places have used the same idea for motor tours, tourism organizations, rt 66 associations, etc, I have been looking for said passports for my collection either new or used, but no luck. Does anyone know how to contact Ken, his email address on his site is invalid and I would like to purchase a print and see if #1976 is still available?

josh,
love the Ken Turmel map! I contacted him at (normal mail) 10524 Goldenrod Lane, Midwest City, OK 73130-7023. I wrote a route 66 article in the April 2007 issue of American Motorcyclist page 65 and talked about the map.

The following paragraph is from the article - hope you like it

Anyone who has traveled Route 66 since about 1995 can’t help but have noticed Kenneth Turmel’s map with postmarks and autographs that is displayed (and sold) everywhere from Chicago to L.A. I’ve noticed them for some time and have been fascinated by this project. I knew eventually I’d buy one. It’s a limited edition of 2448 (number of miles of Route 66) numbered and signed. At the Victorville California Route 66 Museum my eye caught sight of one of these fabulous prints and I commented on it to one of the curators. He told me he had one at home number 1951. I couldn’t believe it “that’s the one I want!” “Why?”, he asked. “Well I was born in 1951" to which he replied “that was the year I hitchhiked Rout 66 as a teenager”. Oh well, I have number 875.

Here is a list of Route 66 pictorial postmarks I have uncovered. I am sure some of you out there have some from past events in your memorbilia. I think the postcard collectors should have some nice postmarks on their cards as well. These are great keepsakes that are indeed are limited. Anyway, thanks for reading and hopefully reminiscing. -Josh

I contacted Ken Turmel last night and was able to purchase his Route 66 and More print edition #1976, my birth year! He was so nice to talk with and a genuinely open individual. I can not wait for my print to arrive, then of course I will have to get it framed. Ken seems to be in good spirits, besides some personal problems, and is looking forward to biking the mother road again on his red Honda. If anyone wants to see his art the site is www.postmarkart.com.

I just added most of my Route 66 postmark collection to my photo page. I hope everyone takes a trip down memory lane. I am sure there are events and places special to you. I am always looking to add new items to my collection so check back later.
