Get More Kicks On Route 66

What to collect on driving the Route 66

Hello,

I am new to Route 66 and I joined few months ago coz I am going on the road in June. Well, I start my trip in about a month and will travel on the route 66 by june.

Before I just drive off, I would like to know what there is to collect from all the states on Route 66?????
Do I have to go to a specific shop to buy something, do I need to go to the post offices, shall I buy a map and get it stamped by the post office or what is there????

I think that I will come with something up when I am already back home :=))))

Please help.
thanks so much
alex

You should collect something that interest you. I also am new to Route 66 and have only traveled portions in Illinois and technically Missouri, but unaware that I was. I like collecting postcards of the places I've been, you could mail them back to yourself with a postmark of that place on that day. I would suggest, if you have time, getting the postcard hand canceled at the local postoffice as opposed to dropping them in a collection box and get a "sprayed on cancel" from the regional processing plant. Most postal clerks/postmasters will handcancel and may even hand back the postcard to you upon request, especially in small towns. There is no charge for a hand cancel. Check out Ken Turmels website www.postmarkart.com for a one of a kind route 66 postmark collection.

Your imagination and income are your only roadblocks.

I don't know if you have left yet and where you are starting, but my suggestion is to bring a clear mind to gather memories and take your time. You're going to find a world of wonderment.

Where are you starting from? Rich Henry at his Rabbit Ranch, will have some things you'll need to get. A CD of Route 66 songs from The Road Crew would be great for the trip!

Hello Joe,

I am starting from Chicago.
I am leaving tomorrow California and heading to Illinois.

Please mail me where to find Rabbit Ranch.

Thanks a lot.

Henry's Rabbit Ranch is right on the old route 66 in Staunton, IL. Rich is a member here. You'll find him under the 'members' tab and you can converse with him if you'd like? Have a wonderful time as I know you will. Looking forward to hearing all about it. Be safe. - Joe

Hello,
I know you've already been on your trip but i know you'll go again,as i do even living in England. My wife collects elongated coins where you put 50c in the machine and a squashed penny comes out with a design on.There are lots of machines along route66 i know Laurel has one at Afton Station.A web site called pennycollector.com has all the locations worldwide.(just don't get addicted like my wife.)
Happy collecting,
Mark.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for telling me. Now it is too late. I got a penny at Roswell :=)))

Well. I bought a Route 66 cap and got it signed by all very interesting people. This cap is my pressures now as it also includes a signature from Michael Wallis.

I do not think I will drive all of Route 66 again, but sometimes only a part of it as it goes through California where I live :=))

Thanks again and have a wonderful next trip!
