The National Route 66 Festival is an annual event celebrating the historic road that runs from Chicago, IL to Santa Monica, CA. The National Festival is held in a different location on Route 66 each year. Illinois hosted the 2008 festival this past June. Litchfield is a true piece of small town America, steeped in the golden age of Route 66. Visitors talked with famous Route 66 authors and artists who are dedicated to preserving the Road through their work. A Car Show, showcased well preserved and restored vehicles from the past 100 years. Next years National Route 66 Festival is scheduled for Flagstaff, Arizona, a must do for the summer of 2009.

Farewell to Bob Waldmire Route 66 Amassador

By DAVE BAKKE (dave.bakke@sj-r.com) THE STATE JOURNAL-REGISTER
Posted Dec 16, 2009 @ 10:46 PM
Artist and Route 66 legend Bob Waldmire died peacefully as the sun rose over Springfield on Wednesday morning.
For most of the past few months, Waldmire had been living near Rochester in the converted school bus he used as a home while in central Illinois.
In an interview with The State Journal-Register in October, he said he realized about a decade ago that he had abdominal cancer. But having lived most of his life as a vegan who marched to his own drummer, he refused any invasive procedures that might have prolonged his life, because it would be at the expense of his life philosophy.
He spent much of this fall in the school bus, lying on a couch and talking with friends. Many of them were his fellow Route 66 devotees who came from their homes hundreds of miles away to say goodbye.
Waldmire was thoroughly enjoying the attention and the chance to see so many friends.

A pleasant afternoon with Bob Waldmire. 11.11.09

Today, I ventured to Rochester IL and the Waldmire's Cardinal Hill Candles & Crafts shop. This was my first visit there and I enjoyed its rustic charm. The place is ran by Bob's brother Bill whom is a most gracious host. He asked if I had been to the bus yet to see Bob. I was a dead give away as a roadie sporting my 75th Anniversary hat. I said I had not, but was wishing to if he was available. They carry a wide selection of home made candles, telephone pole line insulators (which I've alway… Continue

New Facebook application "Get Your Kicks on 66"

I recently had the pleasure of receiving a gift from another 66 roadie via my facebook page. They had sent me a "Cozy Dog and Fries" and in return I sent out a "Ted Drewes Frozen Concrete". It was nice to see a lot of the Mother Road icons featured on this app. Feel free to look me up and be my friend. Also, be sure to add a ROUTE 66 PEOPLE badge to your facebook page and support/share America's Main Street with the world.

C-YA on down the highway.
